The Language Barrier: a Hidden Roadblock to Success

One of our most important goals is the sustainability in education.

A significant practical barrier which many newcomers face is a lack of English language education and practice. Not only does this present a roadblock to daily affairs, but it exacerbates the isolation many feel upon being displaced in a foreign nation. Most English education programs in resettlement initiatives are focused on a specific age group, and do not cover many other demographics of newcomers. Often, they are not offered at all, and have little accountability and administrative oversight. The impacts of this barrier are massive. The lack of English proficiency presents barriers in employability, advocacy, and general communication.

Sacramento is second-most racially, ethnically, and culturally integrated city in the United States. The predicted large influx of newcomers in the coming years has a right to be a part of our welcoming community. Our partners have a long history of translation and education services. We specialize in programs that will promote English development throughout the entire newcomer community.

One of our most important goals is the sustainability of this education; we work to establish English as a permanent skill in our students, not just as a temporary solution. The Sacramento Support Center aims to rid our students of language barriers, as to promote the integrated, welcoming Sacramento community.
